Gosnells Sets the Pace
for Vibrant Living

START spreading the news, the little old suburb of Gosnells will shine in New York soon as the best example of livable neighbourhoods.

The Ministry of Planning found out yester- day that the Congress for New Urbanism in the United States has awarded top honours to its livable neighbour- hoods program. The ministry had put forward Gosnells city as its best example of using that approach.

The annual award, which is usually not given to projects outside the United States, will be presented in New York on June 7.

From a tired and tatty Town centre, Gosnells undertook to revitalise its town centre and create a sustainable and vibrant community hub.

It has instituted livable community practices in its newer areas, such as Canning Vale and Southern River. These include incorporating open spaces and community facilities within the new developments.

Planning Ministry urban design director Evan Jones said Gosnells was the best example of using the livable neighbour- hoods policy for greenfields development in new communities and revitalisation plans in older areas.

"It's great to get international recognition for livable neighbourhoods," he said. "Gosnells has a credible plan and good examples of that solid urban design.

We started working on this about five years ago and developed ideas and concepts into what suited the W A community. It has turned out that it suits the international community." Gosnells mayor Pat Morris was elated by the award news, 'It's a massive endorsement for the work we are doing here at Gosnells," she said.
